Swimming success for Notts at PSUK Nationals 2009 Report by Nicola Lyon

Notts swim team beat tough competition from 32 forces to come 4th overall at the Police Sport UK swimming nationals. The trip to London on the 4th and 5th April 2009 also secured a place in the GB squad for one city PC.

Two days of strong performances led to numerous high ranking swims and several personal bests being broken. Some outstanding races by Pc James Patterson (City South DSU) in Free, Back and Fly won his place in the GB police swim team who are competing in the European Police Swimming Championships in Spain later this year.

James Patterson and Rebecca Hodgman (South Notts DSU) made it to the ‘Skins’ final, a new event designed to challenge even the strongest swimmer. They reached the final eight in the men’s and women’s 100m Individual Medleys, before entering a knock out stage where competitors had to swim one of four strokes, selected at random from a hat, before the slowest swimmer was eliminated. Both Notts swimmers gave the other forces a run for their money before eventually being knocked out.

It was second place for the men’s 200m Freestyle relay (140+) consisting of Pcs James Patterson, Bruce Arnold, (Force Support), Jon Mortimer (South Notts response) and Paul Gregory (City North DSU). While it was third place for the women’s 200m Freestyle relay (140+) Sgt Marnie Gilliland (South Notts performance & audit), Nicola Lyon (East Mids Collaboration Team), PCs Kate Long (City South response) and Rebecca Hodgman.

Notts was represented by PCSO Neil Williams (City South), Paul Moore (retired), Dave Morley (retired), James Patterson, Jon Mortimer, Bruce Arnold, Rob Steel (Training), Paul Gregory, PC Chris Treharne (Sherwood Project), Nicola Lyon, Marnie Gilliland, Kate Long and Rebecca Hodgman and managed by PC Lucy Blount (City South DSU).

Notts makes a splash at Scott Brown life saving competition 2008

Ten forces took part in this year’s Scott Brown lifesaving competition run by Notts. Three home teams also competed at Nottingham University Pool in the inter-divisional contest.

Changes to the lifesaving scenario brought the resuscitation and poolside incident together for the first time. Teams worked to take control of a scenario, whilst simultaneously managing casualties and administering first aid.

The rope throw relay saw teams battle against the clock to throw a rope 15m into the pool and tow all four team members to the side.

With many failing to complete the rope throw relay, the final event was critical. The swim and tow relay saw competitors swimming 50m then towing a casualty 50m using one of four tows.

City officer PC Lucy Blount, retired officer Paul Moore and PC Terry Draycott organised the competition, assisted by PCs Chris Treharne, Jon Mortimer and DS Kathryn Craner on the day. Lucy said: “This was a great event attended by forces across the country, many bringing 2 or 3 teams each.

“This year’s standard of lifesaving was very high and while there was healthy competition in the pool, all the teams took time to socialise afterwards.”

The winning teams were presented with trophies later that day. Cleveland took first place, closely followed by Met ‘B’ and Notts City, consisting of PCs James Patterson, Stephen Craner, Paul Gregory and Dean Sweeny. They also won the inter-force competition with second place going to a mixed Dorset and Notts team, in which PCSO Neil Williams and Force Support’s Pc Bruce Arnold competed, narrowly beating Notts Girls made up of PS Marnie Gililand and PC Rebecca Hodgman from South Notts, PC Kathryn Long from City Division and Nicola Lyon, seconded to the East Midlands Collaboration Team.

Teams from Merseyside, Hampshire, Norfolk, Dyfed Powys, Dorset, Met, Tayside, Gwent, Cleveland and Nottinghamshire competed.
