The clay shooting section is well established with both serving and retired Police and Support Staff.
Clay shooting is available all year round and in Nottinghamshire we are fortunate to have several excellent clay shooting grounds, with several other grounds just over the County boundaries and within easy travelling.
Inter Force competition usually runs between March and October. A fixtures list is published around February and each Force hosts it own shooting event. Members of the section travel throughout the country to participate at most of the hosted shoots, and the Notts Shoot is usually held in June at Orston Shooting ground (just off A52 near Bottesford).
There are numerous clay shooting disciplines providing a variety of clay targets, however most of the Police competition events are usually 100 targets of sporting clays.
Over the years the team have fared reasonable well, however more recently individual members have had success in winning competitions at Inter Force level, and representing the Great Britain Clay Shooting Teams at Inter Service level against the Army, Royal Air Force, Navy, Prison and Fire Services. The British Police have a strong team and have generally dominated each series of events.
Our section have shooters new and old of varying ability, and clay shooting is a sport where the novice shooter is encouraged and guided until clays are shot at and broken into balls of dust!
The PSUK Nationals are held each year at the end of August. This event is shot over 4 days (shooting Sporting, Skeet and Down the Line targets). The competition is held at East Yorkshire Gun Club near Beverley. We stay in accommodation at Beverley throughout, and it is good to meet colleagues from other Forces socially between events.
The Section does not have its own equipment. Most members have tried the sport at one of the local grounds where guns and ammunition can be provided. It is not necessary to possess a shotgun certificate when using club equipment at a licensed ground, Having got the 'shooting bug' members have then gone on to purchase their own equipment.
More recently the Notts section have received sponsorship by H.A Fox Jaguar of Nottingham. This has enabled the section to purchase matching shooting jackets and polo shirts with embroidered Jaguar logo.
Around April / May the section will hold another 'have a go day' where everyone is welcome to try their hand at the sport. Details will be published in due course.
However, you don't have to wait that long. Most members attend grounds throughout the year for practice (whether in groups or individually) and will gladly welcome anyone who would like to try the sport. Grounds are open throughout the week.
Clay Shooting is exciting, challenging and as most shooters find it ' addictive '
The section are keen to recruit new members.
